Jan Young is a writer, K-4 Remediation Tutor, and piano teacher. Her husband's cowboying experiences on California and Nevada ranches provide true-life details for her stories. Located in Winnemucca, Nevada, Jack and Jan help people with their horses through clinics, lessons, and training. Besides her degree in Behavioral Science from Fresno Pacific University, she earned a certificate from the Institute of Children's Literature, and has published fiction and nonfiction articles and stories for children and adults.

Fred, in the corral, with only the sorrel left to catch, looked around.
Gypsy silently raced toward the cougar, and at the same moment, the panic-struck sorrel bucked and squealed.
A hoof struck Fred on the side of the head. He crumpled and fell.
Ben heard a vicious snarling as Gypsy tangled with the big cat.
There was a pitiful howl from Gypsy, then silence. The cat streaked away.
Horrified, Ben ran toward the corral. “Fred! Fred!” There was no answer. Fred didn’t move.
