EXCERPTS:

Hoofs pounding, the runaways veered to miss a pickup coming down the driveway.
A wrinkled old face peered out the driver's side window. "What the . . . ?"
His well-dressed passenger turned to watch as the loose horses thundered past.
Seeing the pickup, Ben gasped. "It's Fred!"
"Didn't I tell you to stay away from the barn today?" shouted Ben's dad.
He swung into his saddle as he prepared to join the other cowboys in pursuit of the runaways.

* * * * *

Fred, in the corral, with only the sorrel left to catch, looked around.
Gypsy silently raced toward the cougar, and at the same moment, the panic-struck sorrel bucked and squealed.
A hoof struck Fred on the side of the head. He crumpled and fell.
Ben heard a vicious snarling as Gypsy tangled with the big cat.
There was a pitiful howl from Gypsy, then silence. The cat streaked away.
Horrified, Ben ran toward the corral. “Fred! Fred!” There was no answer. Fred didn’t move.
